EPD Encourages Residents to Register Their Bikes

Daniel Radding, The Daily Californian

The number of bikes registered with the Eugene Police Department is up this year. But EPD says bike thefts also increased from September 2016 to September 2017.

EPD is encouraging Eugene residents to register their bikes. The department says that makes it easier to recover them if they’re stolen. Registration is free and available on the EPD website.

If your bike is stolen, Community Service Officer Program Manager Jeff Blondé says report it right away.

“Time is usually of the essence as far as the reporting and trying to track it down quickly,” Blondé says. “Sometimes, I’ve had people tell me at different events that they believe that things disappear quickly, that once it’s stolen you have a limited window of time to get it back.”

EPD also encourages bikers to use both a U-lock and cable lock. That could help prevent bike theft in the first place.
