Money and time are running out for the rent assistance program in Lane County. Applications close on December 13th.

Currently, the county is only able to give out funds for renters of very low income. Lane County spokesperson Jason Davis said pending applications are expected to expend available funding.

“The majority of people who are facing eviction are not people who are facing eviction for a disciplinary issue or a violation of terms,” he said. “They’re facing eviction because they simply don’t have money and they don’t have the support system to borrow money from to borrow money from to get enough funds to pay their rent.”

Applicants for rent assistance will have 90 days “safe harbor” from eviction while their applications are being processed. Lane county has distributed $20,527,423 to landlords and tenants to assist 3,281 local households since July 1st. They’re hoping to have more funds for rent assistance in the New Year.

• To apply, visit www.lanecountyor.gov/rent or to be assisted by phone, call (541) 682-3776 Monday – Friday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
