RE: The Island Park Gallery at the Willamalane Adult Activity Center in Springfield “Aprons and Albums” by Marissa Solini and Kevin Stacey, Jan. 31 through Mar. 29.
You’re listening to Viz City, KLCC’s Arts Review program. The Island Park Gallery at the Willamalane Adult Activity Center in Springfield welcomes a new exhibit titled “Aprons and Albums” by Marissa Solini and Kevin Stacey Today, we’re talking to Kevin Stacey in his home studio about how he got started in making serigraphs and screen prints.
"The reason I got started doing it is because, well I used to do the airbrush work, and I’d spend weeks on a piece, and when I was done, it was the only one I had. Well, since I was usually doing it for my bands to promote shows, it was kinduv frustrating. It was like, “Where am I going to put this one piece where it’s not going to get stolen or vandalized?” And I realized that if I switched over to, if I could figure out how to do serigraphs and screen printing the way all my heroes did it in the ‘60s, then I would have as many copies as I wanted, and they would still all be hand-done originals.”
Yes, both a musician and an artist, Kevin creates rock posters and album art as well as fine art inspired by the masters.
"The more I got into learning how to do serigraphs, the more I discovered through books that a LOT of people doing it, making rock posters, were themselves in bands. I thought that was really cool! I felt like..this is...my people!"
Kevin has been in rock and roll bands since the age of 14, and he says that isn’t something he’s ready to let go of yet.
"I’m happiest when I’m making art work for a band I’m in--it’s where the music meets the art, and that is when I am truly in my element."
If you’d like to see what airbrushing looks like, Kevin will be doing a demonstration at an opening reception this Friday, Feb. 9 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Willamalane Adult Activity Center, 215 West C Street. Kevin’s vibrant pop album covers and show posters will be on display through Mar. 29.
