Eugene’s oldest city park is a favorite place to visit on Mother’s Day. Hendricks Park draws crowds because of the colorful blooms there in early May.
Beth Copeland, a member of the Friends of Hendricks Park, said there are many colorful blooms right now, from ground-level native plants to rhododendrons (or "rhodies"), and a large clematis vine in a tree on the upper lawn.
She told KLCC the park is accessible for Mother’s Day visitors.
“The rhody area has pathways and if people are using walkers or wheelchairs, for the most part you can maneuver around in the rhody garden,” she said.
Copeland said the Friends of Hendricks Park will staff an information desk, and have maps and newsletters available.
She said Mother’s Day visitors can clog the roads, so the group has volunteers help with parking. The upper parking lot will be limited to drop-offs or handicap parking, and added parking will be available on the section of Fairmount Boulevard within the park, which the City of Eugene makes one-way for the holiday.
If Sunday’s weather is colder or rainy, Copeland said parking may be less of an issue, and the volunteers might not stick around for the entire 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. shift.
