Two Springfield Police officers were stabbed and a suspect was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon, according to a press release from the Springfield Police Department.
The incident occurred at 2:37 p.m. Wednesday in the Gateway area of Springfield.
The press release said the two officers have been hospitalized with "significant injuries."
Police said they originally responded to a call regarding a "disorderly subject" inside a business at Gateway and Beltline. They said an officer contacted the subject a short distance away at Gateway and Kruse.
Police said the suspect "brandished two knives" and the first officer called for backup. They said the suspect then stabbed the two Springfield officers.
Oregon State Police responded to the area to assist.
The press release said an attempt to arrest the suspect resulted in an "officer-involved shooting," which was fatal.
No information has been released about the suspect. The names of the two Springfield officers have not been released. The Oregonian reports the officers were in stable condition Wednesday evening.
The original press release did not specify whether the officer who shot the suspect was with Springfield Police, Oregon State Police, or another agency. A statement released by Springfield Police Department on Thursday morning stated that a Springfield Police Officer was "involved" in the shooting.
During the incident, a section of Gateway Street was closed and the public was advised to avoid the area.
