And Thereby Hangs a Tale: Understanding Ourselves Through the Stories We Tell

And Thereby Hangs a Tale: Understanding Ourselves Through the Stories We Tell

In our day-to-day lives, we tend to think of stories as mere diversions, as anecdotes or fantasies that may be entertaining but that are less important than facts and the stuff of “real life.” But if we stop to think about all of the forms that stories take, and all of the roles that stories play in our lives, we can see that in a sense, we— and the world we inhabit— are made up of stories. More than just shaping our personal identities and influencing our worldviews, stories create meaning, give us much needed moral guidance, help us to understand our place within the community, and so much more. For the November Community Philosophy Circle, we will explore together the role of stories in our lives and the ways that stories provide meaning to us. We will be joined by professional storyteller Steven Henegar.
