Lecture by Professor Steven Tuck (Miami University Ohio) abou the decorative programs in ancient Roman Amphitheaters. Amphitheaters like the Colosseum at Rome were the greatest entertainment venues in the Roman world. Their decoration was designed to reinforce both the activities within the structure such as animal hunts and prisoner executions and the value systems behind them while enhancing the experience for spectators. This lecture examines the decorative programs of the Colosseum and its sister amphitheaters at Capua and Puteoli.
