Dr. Brad Schultz, Organ Recital | Concerts at First
When invited to return to the Concerts at First series, Dr. Brad Schultz immediately thought of one word: gratitude. Gratitude for the creative freedom, relationships, and community formed during his years at First United Methodist Church; gratitude for the space where ideas flourished—including a doctoral dissertation written in the church office and repertoire explored on the magnificent Hochhalter organ; and gratitude for the congregation’s support as he and his husband Matt transitioned to the next chapter of their careers in San Francisco.
Reflecting on how musicians express gratitude to one another, this program explores musical homage and influence across centuries. The repertoire includes works by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Melchior Schildt, Anna Lapwood, Maurice Duruflé, Brenda Portman, and Paul Ayres, along with a vibrant set of variations on “I Got Rhythm” by Harold Britton. Together, these works trace a lineage of mentorship, inspiration, and artistic acknowledgment—music as an offering of thanks.
