This large ensemble, directed by UO Professor Emeritus of Jazz Studies, Steve Owen, is home to many of the region’s top professional players that meet every first Monday of the month to play compositions from classic works by Basie and Ellington to pieces written by contemporary composers.

The second set is opened-up for local students and community musicians to sit-in with band members to play together. It is an exciting evening where audience members enjoy music rarely performed and heard in a club setting.

The Jazz Station's One Set Wednesday student spotlight series presents saxophonist Max Cullen. Join The Cullen Quartet for a live recording session of timeless classics/originals from standards cemented in the hard bop era to contemporary jazz. Afterwards pianist Keith Brown will host a second set jam session.

Max Cullen is an acclaimed musician and educator who dedicates his craft to the tradition of Jazz and American culture. Max is currently finishing a double major in music education and jazz studies at the University of Oregon. His musical experiences were guided by excellent educators at a young age in public schools, because of that, Max Cullen has the goal to pursue and enlighten the youth in the tradition of bebop era to contemporary jazz as he started his education journey teaching at Willamette High School in West Eugene this past fall. As education will be a full time focus in the near future, Max is dedicated to created scintillating performances rooted in jazz.

An eclectic mix of original songs and unique takes on roots and bluegrass tunes, with a healthy dose of instrumental jams.

Trio Subtonic is a groove heavy power trio out of Portland, Oregon that blends genre bending funk with slow burning underground soul jazz. Subtonic explores a coalescence of rock, soul, funk and jazz that simultaneously draws in listeners and pushes boundaries. The trio features Galen Clark on keys, Bill Athens on bass and Micah Hummel on drums.

On Friday, Dec. 6th the Community Center for the Performing Arts and LNE proudly presents Sixpence None the Richer at the WOW Hall.

SIXPENCE NONE THE RICHER

Sixpence None the Richer began taking shape in New Braunfels, Texas in the early ‘90s, when guitarist Matt Slocum met vocalist Leigh Nash at a church retreat. The group recorded a demo before eventually signing with R.E.X. Records. Their debut LP, The Fatherless & the Widow, appeared in 1993 and their sophomore effort, 1995’s This Beautiful Mess won a Dove Award and was followed by the Tickets for a Prayer Wheel EP.

In 1997, Sixpence None the Richer released their self-titled album and two years later exploded globally when the track “Kiss Me”, from that album, was released as a single. The song has been featured in countless movies and TV shows and catapulted Sixpence None the Richer’s star power into the mainstream, earning airplay in more than ten different countries.

Accolades continued as the band’s rendition of the La’s “There She Goes” also became a major hit. In fall 2002, Sixpence None the Richer returned to form with Divine Discontent. The band’s cover of the Crowded House classic “Don’t Dream It’s Over” pushed Sixpence None the Richer’s name back into the charts in early 2003. Although the group quietly disbanded in 2004, they remained active as individuals and continued to release music periodically, including the albums Dawn of Grace and Lost in Transition.

Fast forward to 2024 and all-original members (Leigh Nash, Matt Slocum, Dale Baker, and Justin Cary) have reunited and are writing and recording new music and preparing for a world tour. As a taste of the new music, you can hear “The Tide” released in late 2023 as Leigh Nash + Sixpence None the Richer, which has already amassed over 2 Million views and streams across platforms. Curb Records is also celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the band’s self-titled (Kiss Me) album by re-releasing it in a collectible vinyl series that also features the new track, “The Tide”.

Sixpence None the Richer has helped shape the musical landscape across generations and are gearing up for an exciting road ahead.
