Luke Skywalker & the Transcendent Function

Luke Skywalker & the Transcendent Function
Local nonprofit Eugene Friends of Jung welcomes its board member, Steve Ellerhoff, PhD, for his third lecture on Star Wars and Jungian thought. This seminar is derived from a chapter in his forthcoming book, Jung and the Mythology of Star Wars.
In this seminar, we will learn more about Jung’s idea of the transcendent function, whereby tension between the conscious and unconscious brings about a new, third condition of consciousness. A subtle change in Luke Skywalker’s costume at the end of Return of the Jedi, when he calls his father back from the dark side and the Emperor is defeated, illustrates the transcendent function in a mythological way. We will explore Jungian definitions of symbols and signs, and come away with a better understanding of the transcendent function. We will also consider Luke’s regression in the sequel trilogy and his commitment to nonviolence.
Tickets are on a sliding scale from $10 - $20.
