Yoda: An Archetypal Amplification

Yoda: An Archetypal Amplification
Eugene Friends of Jung hosts board member Steve Ellerhoff, PhD, for his second seminar on Jungian Psychology and Star Wars.
This event is a fundraiser for the local nonprofit Eugene Friends of Jung.
In this seminar, we will consider Yoda, the small green Jedi Master of the Star Wars saga, as a representation of the senex archetype. Yoda’s development from old wise man at the heart of galactic peacekeeping to hermit exiled on a swamp planet reveals how a fall from power can humble us into a life of greater connection to life itself. Jungian analyst James Hollis’s ideas about the swamplands of the soul apply to Yoda’s final decades, where he meditates upon his 900 years and trains his final student, Luke Skywalker. We will also consider “Baby Yoda” as an inversion of the senex into another Jungian archetype: the puer, or divine child.
