Police Response To UCC Shooting Described

The Douglas County DA has determined that the deadly force that officers used against the shooter at Umpqua Community College was justified.

Roseburg Police Chief, Jim Burge, said without the actions of Detectives Joe Kaney and Todd Spingath, the magnitude of the event would have been multiplied.

Jim Burge: “As police officers we know that we could be required to put our lives on the line at any time to help those in need. The shooting at UCC showed what amazing character your police officers have, and how they’re willing to risk their lives for their community.”

Burge says the two detectives were in plainclothes, with no protection, but immediately engaged the shooter. They fired three times. Two shots hit the wall, the other hit the gunman, who then went into a classroom and shot himself fatally.
