A new City of Eugene ordinance would require dog-owners to have proof of their dog’s license when they’re downtown. The requirement took effect on May 31st.
City of Eugene spokeswoman Lindsay Selser says the ordinance is meant to address concerns about safety.
“We already have a city-wide dog-licensing ordinance.” Selser says, “So you’re already required to have your dog licensed. This is just saying in that really high traffic, high pedestrian area of our downtown core. You need to absolutely have on your dog’s harness or collar those tags that certify that it’s licensed and vaccinated.”
Selser says at this time, the city is working to educate people about the law. They’ll eventually issue fines of $125 for those who don’t comply.
