Fires Near Mapleton Prompt Evacuations

Update: 8:42 p.m. 8/30/2020.

Several fires sparked Sunday about a mile from Mapleton have grown to about 300 acres and are being managed as one wildfire. Officials with the Oregon Department of Forestry say the Sweet Creek Milepost 2 Fire was burning uphill away from the town Sunday evening. ODF says at least six aircraft and more than half a dozen fire engines have been fighting the fire. Helicopters and airtankers are also attacking the blaze. 

The Lane County Sheriff’s office Sunday afternoon announced evacuation notices for Hadsall Creek Rd. and Sweet Creek Rd. near Mapleton. 

The Red Cross has set up an evacuation point for the Sweet Creek Fires at Siuslaw Middle School in Florence, 2525 Oak Street.

The Lane County Sheriff Sunday announced evacuation notices for Hadsall Creek Rd. near Mapleton due to fires.

Hadsall Creek Rd. is under a Level 3 evacuation notice, which means leave immediately. Sweet Creek Rd. is at Level 2, which is be set to go at a moment's notice.

The Siuslaw News reports Oregon Department of Forestry is getting help from fire crews from Mapleton, Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue, and other agencies. SVFR Fire Chief Michael Schick says the fires are off Sweet Creek Road within a couple of miles of Highway 126.  

The fires' cause is under investigation.
