Crabbing season is official underway in Oregon, north of Cape Blanco.

Almost 2 months behind the target date of Dec 1st, prices for Dungeness crab have been negotiated and tests for domoic acids have come back clean. Now, fishermen on the coast are just waiting on better weather to start crabbing.

Jason Blume is Assistant General Manager at The Fisherman’s Market, in Eugene. He says business in December and January has been slow, causing them to source from different states. The store eagerly anticipates the arrival of fresh crab from the Oregon coast.

“We’re going to see some beautiful, beautiful crab. These guys have had two whole extra months to become plump and fat and awesome.”

Blume says this is the longest delay that he has seen in 10 years in the industry, and says it was in part due to concerns about domoic acid and meat content, but mostly due to price negotiations between fishermen and big processors.

Retailers in Eugene are eagerly expecting first shipments of crab to arrive over the weekend, depending on the weather.
