Eugene’s ambitious 5th Street Market expansion hit a few speed bumps in 2020.  But as KLCC’s Brian Bull reports, developers are optimistic that the 75 million dollar project will roll out fine in 2021.

Casey Barrett is executive vice president of Obie Companies, which has been spearheading the development.  He says about a fourth of the Gordon Loft units are already leased, with the Gordon Hotel opening its guest rooms ahead of the Valentines Day weekend.

Casey Barret, executive VP for Obie Companies, at the 5th Street expansion project unveiling in early 2018.

“We’ve been delayed I’d say by a month and a half maybe," Barrett told KLCC.  "We were originally opening around Black Friday, that time after Thanksgiving headed into the holiday. And some of the impacts…definitely coronavirus related.

"Wildfires surprisingly was one of our bigger impacts, because of the two weeks that we were shut down because of air quality, no one could be working on site.”

Barrett was not able to specify how much the delays affected the project’s budget, but added they’ve aimed to control costs and mitigate expenses as they push on.  A lighting ceremony for the Gordon Hotel’s rooftop sign is also scheduled for February.
