President Obama Proposes Free Community College, LCC President Reacts
President Barack Obama announced Friday he plans on proposing free education at community colleges for the first two years. The President spoke on Air Force One and later posted to Facebook as part of a preview for his upcoming State of the Union Address.
Obama: "It's something that we can accomplish, and it's something that'll train our workforce so that we can compete with anybody in the world."
President Obama didn't mention how those first two years of free education would be funded. Lane Community College President Mary Spilde says that's the big question. She says Obama's idea has a lot of details to be answered.
Spilde: "I mean I think it's very clear that there has been huge state disinvestment in higher education in particularly. Any proposal like this that seeks to increase resources is greatly appreciated, but we need to learn more."
Spilde thinks two years of community college education is a step in the right direction. Many times young adults are unprepared out of high school for college level courses and other students may have spent significant time away from the academic atmosphere.
