4J Prepares To Reopen Elementary Schools

Karen Richards

Eugene 4J is on track to bring kindergarten and first grade students back into school buildings the week before spring break. In anticipation, elementary families recently had another chance to change their schooling option.

Eugene 4J Chief of Staff Kerry Delf said quite a few elementary school families switched either from the hybrid in-school model to fully online learning or vice versa. About twice as many people moved from hybrid to online learning said Delf, but “The upshot is that we have about 70 percent of our families are planning to return to school buildings in the hybrid model when the time comes for the elementary grades.”

Delf said teachers who are in schools will have the same cohort in person two days a week and online the rest. The 25% of families who chose to remain online the rest of the year will be assigned a new teacher. About five percent of students opted for the Eugene Online Academy, which has asynchronous classes that are not affiliated with a particular school.
