Lane County To Boost Local Recycling Efforts With Free September Roundup

(Alec Cowan/KLCC)

Recycling has become increasingly difficult since the international market changed what plastics it's willing to take. To help encourage local recycling Lane County Waste Management is putting on a free plastics roundup  at the Glenwood Transfer Station on September 30.

Residents can collect and recycle #2, #4 and #5-grade plastics. These are items such as tubs, jugs, bottles and lids. The county is hoping to collect plastics recently dropped from local recycling programs.

Angie Marzano from Waste Management says local efforts to recycle are more important than ever in an uncertain international market:

"This event is a little bit different because what we’re doing is ensuring that all these materials are clean, they’re collected, and segregated material types, and they will be delivered directly to Denton plastic, who will be on site."

Recyclables must also be clean of debris and contaminants like wood, dirt, rocks, metal and food. The resins from recycled items will be used to make park benches, decking, flower pots and electronic component parts.
