OSU Master Gardener Program Offers Free Vegetable Course

Signe Danler

With “Stay at Home” orders in place more people are finding themselves with extra time on their hands, and an interest in growing their own food. In response, Oregon State University’s Extension Program is offering a free course to get folks started.

More than 12,000 people have signed up to take the vegetable gardening courseoffered through the Master Gardener Program, according Master Gardener Instructor.

Danler attributes this to the arrival of spring and possible weariness over the pandemic.

“If you want to get started gardening, just do it," Danler said.

She said the introductory course covers basics including planning, soil, care, and harvesting.

"Gardening no matter what else, what other benefits it can offer, it should always be fun, and it should be something you can enjoy. So don’t let yourself get stressed out about whether you’re doing it right or whether you’ve learned enough or anything.”

Danler adds she hopes people take time to slow down and appreciate the natural beauty around them, especially during uncertain times.

The course is available for free until the end of April, and will cost $45 after. Other courses within the Master Gardener Program are also available for purchase.
