Blood donations have fallen to a critical low for Bloodworks Northwest. The shortage has the center cutting back on deliveries to hospitals.
Executive Vice President for Blood Services Vicki Finson says they’re operating at 25 percent and because it’s a nationwide shortage they can’t rely on outside help.
Because of a decrease in donations and an increase in need, supply is critically low and at a level Finson has never seen before.
“It’s lasting for an extended period of time. We are actually reviewing every order from our hospitals and the entire community of healthcare is collaborating together to ensure that the blood is used the most effectively that we can,” she said.
Finson said the donation process is safe and centers are following COVID-friendly guidelines. Donations are done by appointment only and can be scheduled online.
