Travel and Omicron intensify demand for COVID-19 testing

Lane County residents in south Eugene wait in line for a COVID-19 test.

The Omicron surge and holiday travel has driven a spike in demand for COVID-19 testing. Long lines are a current reality at many test locations. But there are options.

In Lane County, the public health department faces a dire reality. There’s a lack of health care workers to run test sites because they themselves have received positive COVID-19 diagnoses.

Spokesperson Jason Davis said the county is shifting resources to better meet demand. He adds there are other ways to get tested, including traveling to more distant sites or home testing.

“We have ordered 60,000 at-home test kits that we will be distributing in coming weeks,” he said. “By next week we’ll have a plan and will implement that plan on how those will be distributed.”

Davis said if you can afford an at-home test kit yourself, it is a good diagnostic tool to determine your status. He said several types are sensitive enough to detect the Omicron variant.

OHA guidance on who should get tested:

If you have symptoms of COVID-19 you should get tested by your healthcare provider, regardless of your vaccination status.  You should stay home and away from others while you wait for the results of your COVID-19 test.

If you have been exposed to someone with COVID-19, you should also seek testing regardless of vaccination status. Fully vaccinated people should be tested 5–7 days after their last exposure. People who are not fully vaccinated should get tested when they find out they are a close contact. If their test result is negative, they should get tested again 5–7 days after their last exposure or immediately if symptoms develop.

Close contact means being within six feet of someone for 15 minutes or more over the course of a day, with or without a mask or face covering.
