A new affordable housing complex was announced Friday, in Eugene.

The “Iris Place,” has 53 units, with rent ranging between roughly $500-700 a month. Its $14 million budget was supported by a number of groups and the City of Eugene.

St. Vincent de Paul manages the Iris Place.

“Anytime you have the opportunity to develop affordable housing in the tight market that we have here in the Lane County, Eugene Springfield area, of course for all of us is a really, really big deal,” said Terry McDonald, executive director of St. Vincent de Paul.

Five units are for survivors of domestic and sexual abuse who receive aid from the Hope & Safety Alliance. Julie Weissman is the group’s executive director.

“As soon as someone is fleeing an abusive environment, they are ‘literally homeless.’ It’s just a wonderful partnership where they recognize the needs for sexual assault victims,” Weissman said.

Residents will begin moving in around Thanksgiving.
