KLCC Wins 3 Oregon SPJ Awards

KLCC Wins Three Awards In Oregon Society of Professional Journalist's “Northwest Excellence in Journalism” Contest For 2019

Eugene’s public radio station extends congratulations to reporter Brian Bull and host Barbara Dellenback, who were honored for their work at Monday night’s Oregon Territory SPJ awards ceremony in Portland.

Bull was deemed a winner in the General News – Audio Reporting category for his January 2019 feature looking at how the city of Corvallis is dealing with an increasing homeless population.

Bull’s three-part series on the 20th anniversary of the Thurston High School shooting was also runner-up in the Audio News Series category. The segments revisited the events of May 20-21, 1998 and how survivors are coping with the aftermath.

Remembering Thurston Part 1: 20 Years Later, Wounds and Questions Still Linger
Remembering Thurston Part 2: Survivors Cope, Prosper and Reflect
Remembering Thurston Part 3: A Look at Kip Kinkel's Life Behind Prison Walls

Dellenback took a runner-up win for Sports Audio Reporting for her interview with Bob Welch, former associate editor for the Register-Guard.  They discussed Welch’s book on Dick Fosbury and his innovative one-man high jump technique that revolutionized the event.

"Brian and Barbara are not only accomplished journalists, but each excels in the unique art of audio storytelling,” said KLCC General Manager Jim Rondeau.  “Their work draws the listener in, offering a deeper understanding of their subjects and the issues they raise.  It's wonderful to see them recognized for the excellence they bring to the KLCC newsroom."

News Director Rachael McDonald added, "Barbara has a knack for asking smart questions that illuminate our understanding. Brian's reporting is smart, thoughtful, and sound-rich.  It's great to have recognition from our peers for the excellent journalism happening at KLCC."

KLCC is a listener-supported NPR affiliate that serves the Eugene-Springfield area, as well as communities in the south-central region and coast.
