Springfield Will Unveil New Women Veteran's Memorial Friday

Rachael McDonald

Friday, The City of Springfield will unveil a new monument honoring women veterans. It’s part of the city’s 5-year public art project.

Springfield’s Niel Laudati says they wanted to create something for the U.S. Military. They wanted to fill a void.
“Really women who have served in a military capacity." Laudati says,  "There are not many symbols or sculptures or memorials to their life, to their work and we thought that was very important and when we brought that to the community they seemed to agree. And so that’s what started this process. That was about 2 years ago.”
Laudati says the process was a little bumpy but they convened a women veteran’s committee to come up with imagery that spoke to them and represents them. Laudati says artists Alison and Rip Croswell listened to the committee and created the memorial.
The unveiling is Friday with a veteran’s ceremony that begins at 11 o’clock. It’s at Willamalane Park on Mohawk Boulevard in Springfield.
