EWEB Has Some Tips To Keep Your Pipes From Freezing

The last winter storm in December left hundreds of Eugene residents with frozen or burst pipes. That means more work for plumbers and utility workers, but the costs can be expensive for homeowners or renters. Joe Harwood is the Communications Coordinator for the Eugene Water and Electric Board. He has some tips for keeping your pipes from freezing.

Harwood: "Be sure and insulate all pipes that are located in unheated areas such as a garage, basement or garden. If you haven't done it already, you should disconnect outside hoses and wrap the faucets. The crawlspace vents in the foundation of the house should be covered. And then if it stays cold, you know around 20 degrees, it's probably a good idea to turn on a small but steady stream of cold water at the inside faucet that's furthest from the water meter. That will keep the water flowing and help prevent freezing."

During the last storm, many people found *larger-than-expected heating bills in January. Harwood says to avoid this, don't crank your thermostat up, insulate windows, and wear extra layers inside.
