Community Alliance of Lane County Was Target Of Vandalism

The Community Alliance of Lane County is the most recent target of hate graffiti.

The organization, also known as CALC, say its building was tagged with racist, homophobic and anti-Semitic words and images.

Michael Carrigan is CALC’s program director.

“We went and knocked on doors in the Whitaker neighborhood, where we’re based, put up our hate-free zone fliers and talked to our neighbors," says Carrigan. "We got a great response. We’re not afraid and they’re not going to stop us from doing our work.”

Two Asian-owned businesses in Eugene were vandalized earlier this month. The community rallied in support of those businesses, setting up a Go Fund Me page to help pay for damages.

Carrigan says he’s inspired by the community’s reaction.

“I’m feeling very positive because the community is coming together and saying no to hate in Eugene and Springfield,” says Carrigan.

An arrest has been made in connection with vandalism to Lotus Garden and Yi Shen Market.
