Illegal Fireworks Amnesty Day Allows Residents to Give Fireworks Without Citation

(Alec Cowan/KLCC)

Illegal Fireworks Amnesty Day takes place July 1 and will allow residents to get rid of illegal fireworks without being cited by law enforcement.

Fireworks went on sale June 23 and consumers are only allowed to use them in Eugene city limits July 3 and 4 and the two days over new years. The base fine for possession of illegal fireworks is $250.

Fire Marshall Amy Linder says that illegal fireworks are a safety and noise concern.

“They’re a big problem, we get lots of complaints every year. And they just go on for days, and people are concerned about the noise, we’re already into wildfire season this year, it’s hot, it’s dry, people are concerned with fire danger, people getting injured, and more and more we just hear about the noise complaints.”

Linder says fireworks can be a disruption to military veterans and those with pets. The amnesty day will take place Sunday July 1 from 10 am to 4 pm in the 2nd and Chambers parking lot.
