Digital Privacy And The NSA

Meeting:  Friday, October 4, 2013
Aired on KLCC:  Monday, October 7, 2013

Digital Privacy and the NSA - Who Is Reading Your E-mail and What You Can Do About It

Guest Speakers: Seth Woolley and Kyu Ho Youm

The first Friday Forum of October focuses on practical privacy in the digital age. Is privacy possible? If so, how can you protect yours?

Seth Woolley will also discuss how the National Security Agency cracked into assumingly secure networks and protocols-- with and without the knowledge of the nation’s largest technology companies. Are privacy and anonymity still important as a matter of transparent public policy? If so, why? What technologies can you use to protect your privacy?

Woolley is a senior software engineer at deCarta, Inc., a Silicon Valley spatial database vendor; and a former security team leader at Source Mage GNU/Linux. He is a general security and "big data" spatial database expert who has discovered, published, and fixed security vulnerabilities in core web technologies such as Wordpress and Movable Type. He focuses on the GNU/Linux open source operating system environment that powers much of the Internet.

Woolley was twice the Pacific Green candidate for Secretary of State in Oregon. He is also a member of the advisory board of the Oregon Pirate Party and on the state advisory board of the U.S. Pirate Party, an organization aligned with a global movement that, among other goals, seeks to protect privacy and civil liberties.

Our program will also discuss First and Fourth amendment legal issues brought to the fore by Edward Snowden’s revelations about NSA monitoring of private communications, and the international response to news of US surveillance of communication beyond our borders.

Kyu Ho Youm is the Jonathan Marshall First Amendment Chair at the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication.  A prolific communication law scholar, he has published book chapters and research articles in a wide range of leading journalism and law journals; his writings have been cited in court proceedings both in America and abroad. Youm serves on the editorial boards of a dozen leading law and communication journals in the United States, England, and Australia.  He is active on Twitter.
Youm holds masters degrees in law from Yale and Oxford Universities.  He joined the UO’s School of Journalism and Communication in 2002.

Following the presentation, Woolley and Youm will take part in the City Club of Eugene’s customary Q&A session.
