ShelterCare In the Whit: Renovating Buildings And Reviving Lives

Meeting Date: February 28, 2014

Air Date: March 3, 2014

Organizations in our community are not only concerned about people who are homeless, they are taking concrete steps to create housing for vulnerable families and individuals. ShelterCare is a local nonprofit, organized more than four decades ago to serve homeless families. For a quarter-century, the organization has been providing transitional support for families leaving shelter. Their focus is on families, persons with mental illness, and those with brain injuries.

Susan Ban describes ShelterCare's innovative approach to achieving efficiency and access in providing these services. A new part of that approach is a new facility under construction in the Whitaker neighborhood. The $3.2 million remodel of the 23,000-square-foot warehouse was financed through a low interest SNAP bond and designed by PIVOT Architecture.

Ban describes the renovated building as "housing central" and “one-stop-shopping” where those in need can more easily access services. When the work is completed in August or September this year, ShelterCare’s central hub will contain a kitchen, a store, workspaces, a children’s play area, and other services. It will be a place where families, volunteers, clients, and staff can more effectively find solutions that benefit our community."
