HUD Announces Millions In Funding For Homeless Projects

Catholic Community Services

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded more than $21 million to support homeless projects in Oregon. The money will be spread across 118 programs this year. KLCC's Tiffany Eckert spoke to one of the agencies providing critical housing and services to families in Lane County.

Catholic Community Services in Eugene is a basic needs provider. They sponsor McKenzie Transitions, which helps people take long term steps to move out of poverty. Tom Mulhern is Executive Director. He describes what the nearly $600,000 in HUD funding will do.

Mulhern: "One on one case management with somebody who can work with them and support them and providing rental assistance over the course of several months. To help people get on their feet, get established. They are working on building up their own income and savings so at the end of that time they can transition and keep paying their rent all by themselves without any further help."

Mulhern says the need for these services is greater than the supply. There is a waiting list.  Last year, McKenzie Transitions reported serving 61 families.

Tiffany joined the KLCC News team in 2007. She studied journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia and worked in a variety of media including television, technical writing, photography and daily print news before moving to the Pacific Northwest.
