Facing Lane County's Challenges

Recorded on: February 6th, 2015

Air Date: February 9th, 2015

Challenges facing the county are the focus of the new Lane County Administrator, Steve Mokrohisky. He spent his first six months on the job immersing himself in issues facing the county, building his executive team, and working with commissioners to plan for the future.

In his presentation to City Club, he will address county responsibilities and some areas where the county would like to partner with municipalities. He will discuss the challenges posed by funding law enforcement, road construction and maintenance, and the county’s new strategic plan. Meeting those challenges will require smart financial planning, transparency, and accountability in county government.

Mokrohisky’s 15-year history of successful county administration includes his work as County Manager of Douglas County, Nevada. While there, he led efforts to create financial stability, negotiate long term contracts with employee unions, triple funding for road construction, and construct a new Community and Senior Center. During his tenure, Douglas County won many awards for innovation and its bond rating was dramatically increased.

Lane County’s new administrator earned his B.A. from Marquette University, his M.B.A from the University of Wisconsin, and he graduated in Public Policy from the Les Aspen Center for Government in Washington, D.C. Mokrohisky frequently speaks at state and national conferences on budget innovation, citizen engagement, and regional collaboration among local governments.
