Green Party Presidential Candidate In Eugene

Kyra Buckley

The Green Party candidate for the U.S. Presidency was in Eugene Friday. KLCC’s Tiffany Eckert spoke with Jill Stein about her campaign and what makes her qualified to run for the country’s highest office.

Jill Stein is a medical doctor who calls the American political system the “mother of all illnesses.” She lives in Massachusetts where she ran for governor against Mitt Romney in 2002. Stein campaigns on Green Party platforms such as social justice, environmentalism and non-violence.

This is Stein’s second presidential run on the Green ticket. She is banking on the support of the younger

demographic. Stein promises to cancel student loan debt and in return, hopes college age people will check her name on their ballots.

Stein: “We just qualified for federal matching funds which sets a new record for Green candidates to qualify this early in the election cycle. It’s a sign of the energy and the excitement that’s coming into the race.”

In November, Stein attended the climate change conference in Paris. She says as president, she would implement the “Green New Deal” which includes a policy of 100% renewable energy by 2030.

Tiffany joined the KLCC News team in 2007. She studied journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia and worked in a variety of media including television, technical writing, photography and daily print news before moving to the Pacific Northwest.
