Former Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber explores moving beyond polarization and the type of political tribalism that is undermining efforts to come together to meet shared challenges such as an adequate and fair tax revenue system in the state. Kitzhaber, the longest serving governor in Oregon, known for his common sense approaches to systemic problems, such as delivery and cost of healthcare, speaks on Rebuilding Community – Moving Beyond “New Tribalism.”
Kitzhaber is the longest serving governor in the history of Oregon. He speaks from the perspective of more than 30 years as a political leader in Oregon. First elected to the Oregon House of Representatives in 1979, he served one term in the House before being elected to the Oregon Senate. He served three terms in the Senate (1981-1993), including 8 years as Senate President.
In 1994 Kitzhaber was first elected governor. He served two terms from 1995 to 2003. After he left elected position he continued to work on tough issues such as health care, education and environmental concerns. In 2010 he ran for an unprecedented third term as Oregon governor. He went on to be elected for a 4thterm as governor in 2014. In February of 2015 he resigned as Governor.
He is currently a writer, speaker and private consultant on health policy and politics; early childhood issues and climate change. He serves on the national board of Families USA. He lives in Portland. His free time is spent fly-fishing and white water rafting on Oregon’s wild and scenic rivers.
