In Oregon, the Secretary of State oversees the Archives Division, which maintains the official records of Oregon government; the Audits Division, which provides oversight of public spending; the Corporations Division, which administers business filings; and the Elections Division, which performs administrative and oversight duties related to elections. If the Oregon state legislature fails to establish a redistricting plan for state legislative districts, the Secretary of State intervenes to draw the boundaries. 2011 was the first time in a century that the state legislature completed a legislative and congressional district map without changes made by the Secretary of State or the courts.

State Senator Shemia Fagan was born in Portland and grew up in Dufur and The Dalles. She worked her way through college and law school, earning a JD from Lewis and Clark, and is now an employment attorney. She began public service as a member of the David Douglas School Board. As an Oregon State Representative and Senator, Fagan has worked to eliminate barriers to voting and increase access to the ballot. Senator Fagan is currently the chair of the Housing and Development Committee and sits on the Health Care Committee. She says she is running for Secretary of State because she knows it’s never been more important to protect and expand our fundamental right to vote in Oregon.
Nathalie Paravicini is a Naturopathic Doctor who serves the Medicaid population. She grew up in South America and migrated as a youth to the US. Her prior experience includes covering infrastructure development projects and managing a successful non-profit organization. She has been an active proponent of electoral and campaign finance reform for many years. As a Green Party member and environmentalist, she has long been deeply concerned about climate change and its current and future impact on sustainability, local economies, and small businesses. She believes that the race for Oregon’s Secretary of State in 2020 is one of the few that exemplify the confluence of issues and the tipping point we find ourselves in history.
State Senator Kim Thatcher has called Oregon home most of the last 44 years. She was elected to the House of Representatives from Keizer in 2004, and re-elected to the House four times. Kim ran for the Senate in 2014 and was re-elected in 2018. Kim has been a business owner for over 25 years, with two small road construction-related companies with operations in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. Kim is among the longest serving members of the Joint Audits Committee, served on several elections committees, and is one of the first members named to the Public Records Advisory Council. She is running for Secretary of State to protect fair elections, hold state agencies accountable, and provide Oregon businesses transparency and stability.
