The Election of 2020 will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the most unique exercises in American democracy. Over 150 million voters voted by mail or came to the polls to render verdict on who and what party should lead the nation over the next your years.
This forum will address who the winners were, what were the prevailing themes and issues, and what it might suggest for how America will be governed over the next four years. Two highly regarded members of the University of Oregon Political Science Department and a former long serving member of the Oregon House of Representatives will offer insights and their impressions about the national, state, and local elections.
Speakers:
Priscilla Southwell is a Professor of political science who has focused a great amount of her research on elections and is widely published on the subject, as well as related topics. Professor Southwell has on two different occasions served as Head of the Department of Political Science and also as Associate Dean of Social Sciences. She is the recipient of the College of Arts and Science Grant in 2017 for her efforts to convene an international symposium on Populism. In 2012 she received the Resident Scholar Award from the Wayne Morse Center for Law and Politics. She received her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and holds a M.A from the University of Colorado.
Joseph Lowndes is an Associate Professor of political science who has devoted his research to US politics, race and ethnicity, populism, and political identity and interest. Among his many publications is a book entitled Producers, Parasites, Patriots: Race and the New Right-Wing Politics of Precarity that was released in 2019. Among his awards is the Rippey Innovative Teaching Grant from the University of Oregon and a National Science Foundation Grant for “Analysis of Vote-by-Mail Election in the State of Oregon. Professor Lowndes holds a Ph.D. and M.A in political science from the New School for Social Research.
Professors Southwell and Lowndes will focus their attention during the forum on the national (Presidential and Congressional) elections.
Phillip Barnhart is retired practicing attorney and clinical psychologist, who also served as a member of the Eugene 4-J School Board and as a state legislator representing the 11th District (Lane and Linn Counties) in the Oregon State House of Representatives from 2001- 2019. More recently he is the founder of the Emerald Valley Electric Vehicle Association. Mr. Barnhart holds a J.D from the University of Oregon School of Law and a Ph.D. from the California College of Psychology.
Mr. Barnhart will focus his attention during the forum on the state and local elections.
