City Of Eugene Looks To Expand Temporary Shelter Sites, Will Hold Public Hearing

Melorie Begay/Melorie Begay

The Eugene City Council voted unanimously Monday to hold a public hearing on an ordinance that would increase the capacity of temporary camping and parking sites.

City code currently caps sites at 20 structures. Under this code the city has erected rest stops, microsites, and overnight camping as part of their COVID-19 response. But with more than 2,500 homeless people in the community, they’re looking to expand efforts.

Officials propose increasing the size of temporary shelter areas to 60 vehicles, or 40 tents per site. City official Kristie Hammett told council staff hasn’t found any locations yet.

“Our intent is to— as soon as we have something to not wait to have the list fully complete but to continue to bring back what we have as quickly as we can to determine how— if the site is available for council consideration,” Hammett.

Council will hold the public hearing on April 29. The ordinance would end May 2023.
