Eugene Family YMCA To Close During Pandemic "Freeze"

Melorie Begay/KLCC News

Following Gov. Kate Brown’s 14-day "freeze" placing restrictions on some businesses and activities, the Eugene Family YMCA will pause all on-site services except for childcare. Gyms are required to remain closed during the "freeze" in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19.

In the meantime, the "Y" will offer virtual fitness classes for members, which CEO Brian Steffen said will be amped up during the freeze. The year has been both challenging and in some ways inspiring for the "Y," Steffen said.

“We’ve been pushed to figure out new ways to serve the community, new ways to build relationships and new collaborations and partnerships to form," Steffen said. "Overall, I believe it’s helping us be a stronger organization because it’s making us work harder and differently for years to come.”

He added once the freeze has been lifted, they will work on ways to invite more people into the “Y” while keeping with guidance from the Oregon Health Authority.

The mandated freeze begins on Wednesday, and is expected to last for 14-days.
