Pending approval, federal funding is on its way to Civic Park in Eugene to help the venue build an audience.
House Representative Peter DeFazio secured funding for capital improvements at Civic Park as part of the next Transportation, Housing and Urban Development budget.
“(The funds) They would really help us to clean up, if you’ve been to the site, the retaining wall, that will be the home space for our 2,500 seat stadium," said Bev Smith, Civic Park's Managing Director. "So we need to do some infrastructure work on that, prepping it for the stadium buildout.”
Smith said Lane United soccer played its season there this year and the funding will allow for more fans. She said initial construction is done, but there’s still 1.6 million dollars to raise for Phase One. Her goal is to complete that funding and leave a solid legacy for Nancy Webber, who just retired as the Director of Eugene Civic Alliance.
In addition to the stands, Phase Two also includes bathrooms, a food court and a broadcast booth, as well as a large digital scoreboard. Smith said KidSports served about 190 kids per day this summer in a series of summer camps.
