Greater Albany School Board Hires Interim Superintendent

Jen Wright

The Greater Albany Public School Board hired an interim superintendent on Monday evening, two weeks after firing former superintendent Melissa Goff.

The board voted 4-1 to approve the contract hiring Robert Saxton until June 2022, for a period of 190 days for a salary of $150,000.

During the special meeting, Saxton answered questions from board members about addressing equity in education, COVID concerns and diversity in staff and administration.

Saxton said he believes equity is about making sure all students can access resources, and not taking resources away.

“One of the most important things about equity when we’re trying to figure out how we’re gonna get equitable outcomes is to ask people what it is that they need in order to cause those things to happen,” Saxton said. “And when I say ask, I mean you have to ask everybody and listen really hard, in a way that they’re gonna understand and that you can appreciate.”

Saxton worked in education and administration for 33 years before retiring, and served as the Oregon Deputy Superintendent of Education from 2012 to 2015.

The board received over 100 comments from the public, which were mostly positive, according to Vice Chair Pete Morse.

The meeting can be viewed on the school board’s YouTube channel, and minutes are available on their website.
