After judging nearly 1300 entries, the Public Media Journalists Associationhas announced two wins for KLCC: 2nd place for Division B, Audio Engagement Program (The Friday Show) and 2nd place for Division B, Writing (New Wave of Social Justice Finds Black and Indigenous Activists United.)
The Friday Show is a weekly call-in program produced and hosted by KLCC News Director Rachael McDonald, with recurring guest expert Dr. Patrick Luedtke, Lane County's Senior Public Health Officer. The program is dedicated to taking listener calls on COVID-19, pandemic protocols, vaccines, and many other related issues of the week, providing current and accurate information. News Director Rachael McDonald said, “The show really came out of a perceived need in our community for more information about COVID-19. Many listeners expressed appreciation for the weekly program. It’s gratifying to also get the recognition of our public radio colleagues.”
The feature, New Wave of Social Justice Finds Black and Indigenous Activists United, was written by KLCC reporter Brian Bull and edited by Rachael McDonald. The story focuses on how two communities of color affected by oppression and systemic racism found common ground and solidarity during 2020’s rallies and protests. As part of a collaborative partnership, Bull also produced a print version of the storyfor Underscore, a Portland-based public service media organization.

The PMJA Awards recognize the best work in public media journalism from across the country, produced by a membership representing markets large, medium, and small. This creates one of the toughest journalism competitions for stations.
