A sign showing solidarity among Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) and Black Lives Matter activists stands outside a tipi during a June 2020 event in Eugene.

The feature, New Wave of Social Justice Finds Black and Indigenous Activists Unitedwas written by KLCC reporter Brian Bull and edited by Rachael McDonald. The story focuses on how two communities of color affected by oppression and systemic racism found common ground and solidarity during 2020’s rallies and protests. As part of a collaborative partnership, Bull also produced a print version of the storyfor Underscore, a Portland-based public service media organization.

"The value of our experienced, dedicated journalists has never been more apparent than the past year," said KLCC General Manager, Jim Rondeau. "When Oregonians needed trustworthy information about COVID, KLCC News went to work. When underrepresented voices needed amplification, KLCC was there. We're incredibly proud of Brian, Rachael and our wonderful team."

The PMJA Awards recognize the best work in public media journalism from across the country, produced by a membership representing markets large, medium, and small.  This creates one of the toughest journalism competitions for stations.
