The outdoor burning season for Lane County has been delayed by a couple weeks, given unseasonably warm and dry conditions.

Travis Knudsen of the Lane Regional Air Protection Agency (LRAPA) says typically the fall outdoor burning season begins October 1st.

"But the Oregon Department of Forestry and the Lane County Fire Defense Board have the ability to delay the start of that season if wildfire or fire concerns warrant the need for that delay.”

Barring continued warmer and drier conditions, open burning season in Lane County will begin October 15th.

Knudsen says there are alternatives to outdoor burning.

“There are lots of resources available across Lane County to remove that yard debris without burning it, such as mulching it, turning it into other uses that can be done at the yard, or you can take it to places like Lane Forest Products, Rexius, other Lane County transfer stations and dump sites across the county.”

People can check on the season’s status by going online at www.lrapa.org or by calling the LRAPA daily open burning advisory line at (541)726-3976. Coastal residents can call (541)997-1757.

Lane County residents who burn outside the scheduled season can be fined between $50 to $2500.
