Student veterans at 14 Oregon public colleges will get support for transitioning to higher education.
The Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs has distributed $900,000 in grants to campus veteran resource centers.
Jane Reeder is Interim Director of the Maxwell Student Veterans Center at Lane Community College, which received over $78,000. She told KLCC the needs of student veterans is unique.
"The fact that they’ve had to make quite literally life and death decisions in order to survive, they often struggle with I feel like, normality in terms of comparing their experiences with other students’ experiences," explained Reeder.
"And what we want to do is to honor those experiences and to help others honor those experiences too so that there’s a greater understanding.”
Reeder said roughly 10 percent of LCC’s student body are vets.
The University of Oregon is the other Eugene-area college to receive grant money. Their allocated amount is roughly $32,000.
