The Track and Field Olympic Trials in Eugene were delayed Sunday due to excessive heat, after heptathlete Taliyah Brooks fainted before the javelin throw.
Yet neither heat nor the delay stopped athletes from having outstanding performances.
Ryan Crouser’s shot put world record on the first day of the meet was echoed by Sydney McLaughlin, who ran a world record 51.9 seconds in the 400 meter hurdles on the final day.
JuVaughn Harrison of LSU won the long jump and the high jump, a double that hasn’t happened since 1912, when Jim Thorpe represented the U.S. in those two events.
Ducks past and present had stellar efforts. In Sunday’s morning session, the University of Oregon’s Cooper Teare finished fourth in the 5,000 meter race. After the postponement, U of O star and Bowerman tower icon Raevyn Rogers came in second in the 800 meters in a personal best time. And redshirt freshman Cole Hocker brought some sizzling energy to the new Hayward Field as he sailed past Matthew Centrowitz to win the 1500 meter race.
The Tokyo 2020 Olympics begin July 23rd.
