For the second time in three days, a child was trapped in the rapids of McKercher Park near Brownsville, Tuesday.
Sweet Home Fire personnel responded to a call that an 8-year-old girl was stuck in the exact spot as a 10-year-old boy last Saturday. A log wedged beneath the water’s surface was the cause behind both entrapments.
Before rescue crews arrived, four bystanders freed the girl. They helped string caution tape around the area leading to the sunken log.
The bystanders are named as Cameron Harris, Torell Ireton, Caleb Ritcher, and Dakota Hufled.
Linn County Parks has been alerted to the danger. Sweet Home Fire Dive team members have volunteered to remove the log.
District officials say to their knowledge, no other entrapments have been recorded at this section of the Calapooia River beyond these two cases. They urge people to avoid the area until the hazard has been removed.
