City Club of Eugene honors those who “stick their neck out” for Eugene at its annual Turtles Award program on June 13. This year’s two honorees have worked hard for the betterment of our community. Each will speak to the group.
The second half of the program will feature local author David Hascall. He will share the story of how, in the mid-1920s, Oregon’s rural community of Horton built an all-wooden railroad over High Pass to Junction City. They worked mostly with hand tools and hoped to create a more economical way to take their trees to market. They had no steel rails and no rock fill, just available materials. It was to be the longest wooden railroad in the world, and it almost made it.
Published last year, Hascall’s historical novel, The Longest Wooden Railroad: A Season of Embers, joins fact with fiction to tell this uniquely Oregon story.
As is the City Club custom, a Q&A session will take place after the presentations.
