The Oregon Duck women’s basketball team are in the “Elite 8” for the first time in history. The tenth-seeded team upset third-seeded Maryland Saturday 77 to 63.
Sabrina Ionescu led five Oregon players in double figures with 21 points and the Ducks continued their improbable run through the NCAA Tournament. ESPN announcer Andy Landers:
Andy Landers: “The Ducks have done it again. Another upset for Oregon. Make it 3 straight on the east coast. They may never go home! They’re loving it here and they knock off Maryland 77-63 in the first upset of the day!”
This was the first time the Duck women’s team made it to the sweet 16. Their coach Kelly Graves took Gonzaga to the Elite 8 in 2011. He’s the only coach who’s brought 2 double-digit seeded teams this far.
The Ducks face number 1 seeded UCONN Monday, trying to break the Huskie’s 110 game winning streak. The Oregon State women also made the sweet 16, but they lost to Florida State Saturday 66 to 53.
