Recent snow in the Cascades means Oregon ski areas are open this weekend. Friday was opening day at Hoodoo near Sisters, where General Manager Matthew McFarland described the scene.
“The sun is peeking through the misty high clouds. We have lots of snow on the ground about 38 inches right now,” he said. “And it just looks beautiful and white and covered. A couple of skiers just came down the hill and said it seems just like the middle of the year.”
McFarland anticipates a good year for snow sports.
“The season actually looks like it’s going to be fantastic,” he said. “The forecast is for a La Nina going into the next couple of months, and colder than average temperatures. Which should mean lots and lots of snow for us. So we’re actually really planning on a really deep snow year this year
McFarland advises arriving early to get a good parking spot. Masks are required indoors at Oregon ski lodges.
Opening day at Willamette Pass is Saturday.
