The Woman Who Brought The Dalai Lama To Eugene Has Died

sakyausa.com

The woman who was instrumental in bringing the Dalai Lama to Eugene has died. Lady Palmo, also known as Amala, lived in Cottage Grove.

She was born in Tibet and was 15 years old when China invaded. She lost her parents and siblings in the violence. She escaped to the mountains and spent years in meditation retreats before coming to the United States. A devout Buddhist, she had been working to establish the Palmo Center for Peace and Education in Eugene. Lady Palmo wrote the Dalai Lama a letter every week for 11 years urging him to come to Eugene. He finally came and spoke at the Matthew Knight Arena in May 2013. Her son reports Lady Palmo died of lung cancer at age 71 on September 19th. A date for her memorial service has not yet been announced.
