Mija Andrade: Santa Frida Babosita

Mija Andrade is the new Slug Queen 2017!

The "Society for the Legitimization of the Ubiquitous Gastropod" crowned a new queen last month. Mija Andrade says she ran for SLUG Queen because, " It just looked really fun. I love dressing up, and I got this idea for a persona and...ran with it."

You’re listening to Visual City, KLCC’s Arts Review program. Slug Queens are known for their humorous and imaginative personas. Mija Andrade says she knew she would want to promote the arts as Slug Queen, so she chose a persona based on the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. "My Slug Queen name is Santa Frida Elisa Refugio Babosita. 3:23--3:26 I call myself the Patron Slug of Arts and Culture."

Slug Queens aren’t just beautiful but have a community mission, too: "This is what I’m going to be working for is creating more opportunities for expression and creativity for our community."

As part of the SLUG Queen selection process, competitors have three minutes to showcase their unique talent. "When I was thinking about what I was going to do for a talent, I thought about doing live painting. I figured I’d do a self-portrait. I also wanted to make it fun because the Slug Queen celebration is campy; it’s silly. So my self-portrait was a slug that looked like Frida Kahlo {laughs} so it was fun, really fun."

As "raining" Slug Queen, Mija will be involved with promoting arts for people of all abilities and with the Latino community. "I feel like this is a time where we need things to celebrate and we need things to be hopeful for and we need things to come together, and I feel like art and culture is one of the most unifying ways that we can do that."
